Custodian of Two Holy Mosques opened the King Abdullah Sport City in Jeddah as Al-Shabab easily defeated Al-Ahli 3-0. King Abdullah said, ”You're my sons and brothers and you deserve more and your ancestors built this country.” The opening ceremony followed an exciting first half between the two sides.
Al-Shabab took a 2-0 lead early in the first half through a contentious penalty, which was scored by Fernando Mingazo, followed by Muhanad Asiri’s tap in after a horrible mistake by the Al-Ahli keeper. Al-Shabab then extended their lead in the second half after a terrible mix up in the Al-Ahli defense for Asiri’s second.
The highlight of the opening ceremony was of a flying boy who carried a ball from the centre of the pitch to where King Abdullah was seated. The king then lit the ball and gave it back to the boy who flew down and placed it on the pitch. The floor lit up and showed the lines of a football pitch officially opening the venue.
The the multi-use sports complex is the newest in the Kingdom with a capacity of 60,000 and is located 50 km from Jeddah.
“In recognition of the importance of sports, its benefits and role in the progress of humanity, and out of keenness on the welfare of Saudi youth, we have decided to establish the King Abdullah Sports City,” King Abdullah said in a 2009 royal decree.
